  53. **SPECIAL NOTE FOR MACINTOSH USERS: If your 
  54. display is set to "millions of colors" and you 
  55. are experiencing memory problems, go to Control 
  56. Panels - Monitors and select "thousands of 
  57. colors" as your color depth.  You can also add 
  58. more memory to the application by clicking once 
  59. on the Researcher icon, selecting Get Info from 
  60. the File menu, then changing the Preferred Size 
  61. under Memory Requirements to a larger number 
  62. (make sure you actually have that much RAM 
  63. available).

  65. Installation Instructions:
  66.  
  67. Macintosh Æ                                               
  68. 1. If virtual memory is on, use the Memory 
  69. control panel to turn it off. If you have 
  70. limited RAM, leaving virtual memory on may 
  71. result in better performance.
  72. 2. If you are using RamDoubler and Optimem turn
  73. these applications off.    
  74. 3. Quit all open applications.
  75. 4. Insert the Holt Researcher: American History  
  76. CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
  77. 5. Double-click the American History CD-ROM 
  78. icon.
  79. 6. If you don't have version 4.0.2 or later of 
  80. QuickTime tm installed then double-click the 
  81. QuickTime 4.0.2 folder, double click the 
  82. QuickTime Installer and  the on-screen 
  83. instructions.
  84. 7. Double-click the Install American History 
  85. icon and follow the on-screen instructions.
  86. 8. Once installed, the HRW American History 
  87. folder will reside on your hard drive at the 
  88. location you selected during installation.  
  89. Double-click on the American History icon in 
  90. this folder to start the program.
  91. 9. Search.pdf contains help on searching the
  92. American History database and UserGuide.pdf
  93. contains information about the Holt Researcher 
  94. CD-ROM. To view these documents, you must 
  95. install Adobe Acrobat Reader. Open the Adobe 
  96. Acrobat Installer 3.0.1 folder, double-click 
  97. the Reader 3.0.1 Installer icon and follow the 
  98. on-screen instructions.

  101. 1. Remove or turn off any programs that may 
  102. adversely affect multimedia applications and/or 
  103. installers.
  104. 3. Quit all open applications.
  105. 4. Insert the Holt Researcher: American History 
  106. CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
  107. 5. From the Start menu, select Settings then 
  108. Control Panel.
  109. 6. From the Control Panel, select Add/Remove 
  110. Programs and follow the on-screen instructions.
  111. 7. Once installed, the HRW American History 
  112. folder will reside on your hard drive at the 
  113. location you selected during installation. 
  114. 8.  To run the Holt Researcher: American 
  115. History program, select Programs from the Start 
  116. menu, then select HRW American History and 
  117. American History.
  118. 9. If QuickTime tm 4.0.2 or higher is not 
  119. installed, open the 4.0.2 folder, select 
  120. QuickTimeInstaller.exe follow the on-screen 
  121. instructions.
  122. 10. Search.pdf contains help on searching the
  123. American History database and UserGuide.pdf
  124. contains information about the Holt Researcher 
  125. CD-ROM. To view these documents, you must 
  126. install Adobe Acrobat Reader. To install this 
  127. program open the Acrobat 3.0 folder, select 
  128. Acrobat Installer.exe and follow the on-screen
  129. instructions.

  131.    A Note about Video and Sound Card Drivers on 
  132.    Windows:
  133.       It is important to make sure that your 
  134.     video and sound card software is updated 
  135.     to the latest version.  Manufacturers 
  136.     regularly update their to correct known 
  137.     problems. Especially if your system is 
  138.     over a year old, check with the 
  139.     manufacturer for software updates.
  140.        This will enhance the operation of your 
  141.     system and minimize the potential for 
  142.     incompatibilities with the Holt 
  143.     Researcher CD-ROM and other software.

  199. this Product.  By using this Product, you are 
  200. agreeing to be bound by the terms of this 
  201. agreement.  If you do not agree to the terms of 
  202. this agreement, promptly return the unused 
  203. Product and any accompanying items in salable 
  204. condition to Holt, Rinehart and Winston, Inc. 
  205. for a refund.  If you have any questions 
  206. regarding the use of this Product, the terms of 
  207. this agreement, or the return of the product, 
  208. please contact the HRW Technical Support 
  209. Center.

  211. 1. Grant of License.  This Product is an 
  212. educational product intended for instructional 
  213. use in a classroom.  Use of this Product 
  214. outside of the classroom, except for those uses 
  215. specified below, is prohibited.
  216.  
  217. By purchasing this Product and agreeing to the 
  218. terms of this license you have permission to 
  219. use the text, audio, video, tools, and other 
  220. instructional resources contained within the 
  221. Product for use in instruction, customizing 
  222. your instruction, creating teacher and student 
  223. presentations, and for professional staff 
  224. development.  Permission to copy and distribute 
  225. materials within the Product is granted when 
  226. used for these purposes and in conjunction with 
  227. the use of the Product for individual classroom 
  228. instruction.

  230. You have permission to make one "back-up copy" 
  231. of the software portion of the Product for 
  232. archival purposes, or copy it onto the hard 
  233. disk of your computer and retain the original 
  234. for archival purposes.  Licensed users may copy 
  235. the software portion of the Product from the 
  236. original or from one single computer to another 
  237. single computer (portable or home computer), 
  238. for instruction use, lesson planning and 
  239. preparation, the development of teacher and 
  240. student presentations, or in the development or 
  241. presentation of staff development materials 
  242. associated with the educational use of the 
  243. Product.

  245. 2. License Restrictions.  HRW reserves the 
  246. rights to all materials herein and restricts 
  247. the use of those materials in whole or in part 
  248. for broadcast, distribution, the creation of 
  249. derivative works, and all other uses of the 
  250. Product not specified in the "Grant of License" 
  251. portion of this agreement.

  253. Under the terms of this agreement you may not 
  254. translate the software portion of the Product, 
  255. merge it with another program, or modify it, 
  256. except as specifically described in the "Grant 
  257. of License" portion of this agreement.  No 
  258. portion of the Product may be loaned, sub-
  259. licensed, leased, or rented.  Reverse-
  260. engineering, disassembly, decompiling, or 
  261. otherwise attempting to discover the source 
  262. code of the software portion of the Product is 
  263. strictly prohibited.
  264.  
  265. 3. Copyright.  This Product is copyrighted by 
  266. HRW and is protected by United States and 
  267. international copyright laws and international 
  268. treaty provisions.  Your use of this Product is 
  269. subject to the terms of the "License 
  270. Agreement."  The right to use this Product 
  271. terminates automatically if any portion of the 
  272. "License Agreement" is not adhered to.

  274. 4. Replacements.  Should any of the media 
  275. components of the Product become inoperable as 
  276. a result of physical damage, HRW will replace 
  277. the media component at its current 
  278. manufacturing costs plus the cost of shipping 
  279. and handling within one year from the date of 
  280. purchase.  For replacement of a media component 
  281. due to physical damage please call the HRW 
  282. Technical Support Center to request a return 
  283. authorization.  The damaged item must be 
  284. returned to the HRW Technical Support Center 
  285. along with your written request for a 
  286. replacement and a copy of your paid invoice.  
  287. No replacements will be made for copies of the 
  288. Product sold outside of the U.S., except for 
  289. U.S. Department of Defense Schools. 
  290.  
  291. 5. LIMITED WARRANTY.  HRW REPRESENTS THAT 
  292. FOR A PERIOD OF 90 DAYS FROM YOUR RECEIPT OF 
  293. A COPY OF THE PRODUCT THAT:  1)  THE MEDIA 
  294. ON WHICH THE PRODUCT IS DISTRIBUTED WILL BE 
  295. FREE FROM DEFECTS IN MATERIALS AND 
  296. WORKMANSHIP UNDER NORMAL USE; AND 2) THE 
  297. PRODUCT WHEN USED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE 
  298. WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS WILL SUBSTANTIALLY 
  299. PERFORM THE FUNCTIONS SPECIFIED IN THE 
  300. USER'S MANUAL.  ANY WRITTEN OR ORAL 
  301. INFORMATION GIVEN BY A HRW REPRESENTATIVE, 
  302. DEALER, AGENT, OR EMPLOYEE WILL IN NO WAY 
  303. INCREASE THE SCOPE OF THIS WARRANTY.

  305. IF THE PRODUCT DOES NOT MEET THE LIMITED 
  306. WARRANTY, HRW'S ENTIRE LIABILITY AND YOUR 
  307. EXCLUSIVE REMEDY WILL BE REPLACEMENT OF THE 
  308. MEDIA OR A FULL REFUND OF THE PURCHASE 
  309. PRICE.  THIS LIMITED WARRANTY APPLIES ONLY 
  310. IF THE PRODUCT OR MEDIA ITEM IN QUESTION IS 
  311. RETURNED TO HRW ALONG WITH A COPY OF YOUR 
  312. PAID INVOICE WITHIN 90 DAYS OF THE DATE YOU 
  313. RECEIVED THE PRODUCT.  ANY REPLACEMENT 
  314. PRODUCT WILL BE WARRANTED FOR 90 DAYS FROM 
  315. THE TIME IT IS RECEIVED.  THIS LIMITED 
  316. WARRANTY GIVES YOU SPECIFIC LEGAL RIGHTS. 
  317. YOU MAY HAVE OTHER RIGHTS, HOWEVER, WHICH 
  318. MAY VARY FROM STATE TO STATE.

  320. 6. DISCLAIMER OF WARRANTY.  HRW DISCLAIMS 
  321. ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESSED OR 
  322. IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, 
  323. IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR 
  324. FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE WITH 
  325. RESPECT TO THE PRODUCT.  SOME STATES DO NOT 
  326. ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OF IMPLIED WARRANTIES, 
  327. SO THE ABOVE EXCLUSION MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.

  329. 7. DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY.  IN NO EVENT 
  330. SHALL HRW OR ITS SUPPLIERS BE LIABLE FOR 
  331. ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL OR 
  332. CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES WHATSOEVER, 
  333. INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, DAMAGES 
  334. FOR LOSS OF ANTICIPATED BENEFITS OR 
  335. PROFITS, LOSS OF INFORMATION, BUSINESS 
  336. INTERRUPTION, OR OTHER PECUNIARY LOSS 
  337. ARISING OUT OF THE USE OF OR INABILITY TO
